Hunting Agates along Lake Superior’s Shoreline

Lake Superior Stones along Whitefish Point Beach
Are you a rock hound? Do you ever just sit at the beach and shift through the stones? Do you gather some and bring them home? Do you toss some in the Lake in quiet reflection? Are you in search of Lake Superior agates?
Formed during volcanic eruptions around the Lake approximately one billion years ago, Agates can be found scattered across the shores of Lake Superior in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Characterized by their iron stained, rich red, orange and yellow colored bandings, these stones can often be overlooked in the sea of colored stones along Lake Superior’s shoreline. You’ll know you found one when you see their stunning layers of color!

Lake Superior Agate
No two stones look the same, which makes agate hunting both challenging and exciting. Local artisans like to cut and polish these beautiful stones creating jewelry and other crafts. You’ll find a few of these locally crafted items at local gift shops and galleries.
While you may just admire the stones you find and others may turn them into art, most everyone agrees that the best part of the process is hunting for them!
